Souen Shishi-Mai lion dance

It is said that the dance is associated with Souen FUJIWARA who became the 1st lord of Utsunomiya-jo Castle. The dance has been dedicated to Hie-jinja Shrine in Shingo of Nissato for a long time wishing a town safety, a good harvest, and extermination of devil spirits. It is a three-lion dance with two-male and one-female lions performed in group of three people wearing a lion’s mask which is dedicated twice every year during Obon (returning of ancestral spirits) (August 16), and on the last Sunday in August.
